EDMONTON (April 11, 2001) - A $1 million joint research venture between the Alberta Research Council and BCL Landview Systems Inc., Edmonton, has resulted in a new online tool for farmers, ranchers, agribusiness, agri-retailers and landowners. Landview On-Line is now available on the Internet.
"We are committed to bringing new technologies to the agricultural industry that will have a positive impact on resource use and productivity," says Karen Beliveau, director, Technology Commercialization Office, ARC. "This system turns information and data into knowledge that can improve management and decision making."
Landview Systems software provides mapping, farm records management, precision farming and decision support tools for use in managing crop production information and for making site-specific farming decisions.
"We wanted to work with the Research Council because of our shared interest in knowledge discovery and intelligent systems," says Paul Barlott, president, BCL Landview Systems Inc. "Working closely with the Research Council has been valuable in developing the core technology and in moving our products and services online."
The software has been developed specifically for land resource and agribusiness applications, and is widely used by farm managers, as well as small and large agri-business enterprises. Access to database and data mining capabilities through online centralized data management eliminates the need for these agribusinesses to buy the software or manage the data themselves.
Before release, the new system was tested by agribusiness clients. United Grain Growers (UGG) Vermilion Region, a beta test site, is one such company currently using the online system. "The investment in the Landview system pays back 10 fold," says Keith Berrecloth, territory sales manager, UGG Vermilion Territory.
Barlott Consulting Ltd. (BCL), parent company to BCL Landview Systems, started developing Landview software in 1992 and has since evolved into an Applications Service Provider. In addition to their proven track record in systems development and implementation, the Landview principals and professionals have extensive experience in agribusiness, management, engineering and geology.
Celebrating 80 years as Alberta's premier performer of applied research and development, Alberta Research Council develops and commercializes technologies to give customers a competitive advantage. The corporation works on a contract or fee basis, and co-ventures with others to develop new technologies, deriving a return on investment from the commercialization of new products and processes. ARC is well known for its support to the agricultural sector, including programs in integrated weed, pest and disease management; improved and alternative crop varieties, animal vaccines and environmental impacts.
